Biography
Born April 29, 1970 in Boston, in the family of a professor at Columbia University, a specialist in Eastern religions and formerly a Buddhist monk Robert Thurman and Baroness Nena von Schlebrugg, the most famous model of her time, now a psychotherapist by profession. Previously, Uma’s mother was married to Timothy Leary for a short time. Nena’s father is German, his mother is Swedish.

The name, which means «granting bliss,» in honor of the Hindu goddess Uma, was given to the future actress by her father. It is generally believed that he became the first American in history to be a prince of the Dalai Lama himself, who became a Buddhist monk. The monastic life of Robert Thurman in the United States was severely tested, he returned his vows, graduated from university and now teaches at the religious department of Columbia University.

Uma’s mother was born into the family of Baron Karl von Schlebrugg and Birgit Holmqvist. Von Schlebrugg was a wealthy entrepreneur and went to jail during World War II for refusing to break business contracts with Jewish partners [6]. Birgit Holmquist was a rather successful model in Sweden, in the city of Trelleborg in the south of the country she even erected a monument [7]. Uma’s mother is a Swedish citizen [8]. Arriving in America, she lived among hippies and even briefly married the legendary ideologist of counterculture, a researcher of the effects of psychedelic drugs Timothy Leary. Today Nena Thurman is a respectable psychotherapist.

Uma’s acting career did not go right away. Arriving in New York, Uma worked as a dishwasher and tried to break into a model. She was really noticed only after an episodic role in Terry Gilliam’s science fiction film “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen”. In one of the scenes, Gilliam spoiled Botticelli’s painting “The Birth of Venus”. Venus was Uma Thurman.

But true fame came to her after the film «Henry and June», where she played the wife of writer Henry Miller. Striking its frankness with Puritan American censorship, the film received a rental rating of pornography (later it was replaced by an intermediate NC-17), and Uma Thurman was nicknamed “Sex Symbol for Intellectuals”. “Sexuality has always been an essential component of art,” says Uma. “An actor who wants to accurately portray his character must consider that sexuality is an essential part of any image.”

The sexuality of Uma was also defeated by Quentin Tarantino, who, according to legend, gave her a role in Pulp Fiction as soon as he saw her big feet. The extravagant Quentin was convinced that a woman’s large feet were very sexy. Thanks to Fiction, Uma was nominated for an Oscar for the first time in her life and finally became a star. On February 7, 2006, Uma Thurman was awarded the French Order of Arts and Literature.

In June 2018, it became known that Uma Thurman applied for Swedish citizenship in order to permanently move to this Scandinavian country. To complete all legal and bureaucratic procedures, Thurman hired a prominent Swedish lawyer and former Minister of Justice, Thomas Bodström, in New York.

In 2019, Uma Thurman will play one of the main roles in the mystical drama «Secret Rooms» from the American company Netflix, the picture will consist of 10 episodes.
