Over the past eight years, Umberto Leon and Carol Lim have often been inspired by the water, devoting their collections to Arctic surfing, overfishing and sea beaches. Therefore, it is not surprising that their latest collection for Kenzo was also related to the water theme: this time, designers turned to the Japanese traditional ama divers, who explore the seabed in search of shellfish, algae and treasures. Often using live music, dance troupes and elements of a traditional Japanese theater in their shows, Lim and Leon didn’t keep up this time either: dancers dressed in Kenzo archival collections and okobo sandals wrapped slowly along the darkened catwalk, and in the middle of the show Solange appeared on the stage, accompanied by a brass band. To see the show of the Kenzo Spring / Summer 2020 collection, more than 5,000 people gathered, including students, friends and employees of the brand.

The life of ama divers — or “the last mermaids,” as their designers called them — was reflected in business suits with shorts in purple, black and orange, crumpled, fitted jerseys and mesh shirts. Airy dresses with fluttering strips of fabric resembled the movement of waves, and the materials of some images shimmered with a wet sheen. Jackets were decorated with magnificent sleeves and sailor collars. On open T-shirts, trousers and long dresses, pearls and flowers glittered. Among other sea shipments, one could notice outerwear in the form of swimsuits, neoprene suits, prints of ships, shrimps, mermaids, shells and sea urchins, delicate sleeves, beach sandals and tropical-style jewelry.
